A View From The Porch (June 4, 2014)

Today our view includes a myriad of signs of gardening.  Last evening, Reynold, Mary and I went flower shopping for some annuals.  The flowers that bloom throughout the summer create beauty and calm with their colorful show.

Being frugal and mindful of our budget, we centered on the clearance items.  The petunias were very healthy and full of color.  However, on the true clearance table at the back of the display, there were more flowers in need of care.  We picked geraniums with no flowers and leaves starting to brown at the edges.

Then there was the pink spirea.  It is a shrub.  It is a perennial, blooming year after year.  At $3.00, this perennial was a bargain.  This spirea, however, was filled with dead leaves.  Yet, there was green poking through.  A discussion ensued about how alive this spirea was.  “Break off a branch and see if it’s dead inside or green.”  This was done and the inside was indeed alive.  “This is the challenge spirea,” I said, especially to Reynold.  “Can we make this spirea bloom again?” I asked.

In choosing the slightly wilted, browned, and nearly dead flowers, not only were we being frugal, we were being optimistic.  Optimistic that the right growing conditions of sun, water, and soil will revive these plants.  “We’ll give you lots of sun,” I said to the spirea, because you know giving off good energy helps plants, too.

And isn’t that the way with St. Agnes’ House?  Nearly 40 years of operation.  A little brown around the edges…a little worn.  It’s beauty still needed, like the beauty of a garden.  With the right conditions of prayer, maintenance, money, and care, it continues to bloom year after year.

Enjoy our view from the porch!

Thank you for your generous donations!

You’ve provided $6,450 through our recent fundraising appeal, helping to close the funding gap for 2014!

In addition to the no-sew blankets from the Kyrie Eleison Chapter of the Daughters of the King (see post from June 3), we have received towels and toiletries from employees of the UK HealthCare Physician Liaison Program.

Please continue to pray for our guests!  They tell us they can feel our prayers.
