It’s the day before Thanksgiving, a busy travel day. On Sunday, I traveled to Pittsburgh to a good friend’s house for the week. This allowed me to visit my brother who lives further north and is in a nursing home. Today, I’m impatient. My son and his family are driving through the snowy weather. I’m so anxious to see them.
So, I’m sitting at the kitchen table, watching the snow fall. It wasn’t supposed to snow here in Pittsburgh, but the weather decided otherwise. We have everything for Thanksgiving dinner – turkey, potatoes, pies, rolls, gravy, cranberries.
And I’m so thankful I can spend the holiday with family and friends. We’ll call my daughter tomorrow and we’re actually skyping with my youngest brother who lives in China! I can’t wait to see Macy’s parade and of course we’ll tell the story about the time we spent Thanksgiving in New York City and saw the balloons being blown up and watched the parade go down the streets of New York.
And we know not everyone is as fortunate. For some parents who hoped to spend Thanksgiving with a newborn baby, their baby is in the hospital painstakingly learning how to breathe, maintain their temperature, and eat. For some, their table is smaller this year, as a loved one has died and their hearts are full of grief. For some, they celebrate recovery from an illness or a report that the cancer is in remission. And some have no friends and family, so spend the holiday alone.
We pray for all of the families who found a place of solace and refuge at St. Agnes’ House in the past year. We thank you for your support, allowing the house to be open to embrace these families during chaotic and frightening times in their lives.
Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy this view from the porch!
