A View From the Porch (March 18, 2015)

This week has not gone as originally planned.  Last Thursday, I received word that my brother had died.  He had a chronic degenerative disease and had spent the past four years in a nursing home.  Fortunately, I was able to visit him at the end of February.

The disease had taken its toll.  My brother could no longer speak.  But I arrived by lunchtime and was able to feed him lunch.  Then I’d sit with him, sometimes playing his favorite music, but mostly just being present with him.  On this visit our younger brother, who lives overseas, joined us, so we had a mini reunion.

I notice the telltale signs of grieving — feeling foggy and unfocused.  I’m hoping I don’t have to make too many decisions nor think too deeply.  And I want to be around my family — my children and grandchildren.

I’ve been busy being grandma…getting up early and helping get the kids ready for school; walking my grandson to his bus; picking the kids up from school and helping them do their homework.  I’ve been excited to have the kids read to me and to hear my granddaughter talk excitedly about trying to catch a Leprechaun on St. Patrick’s Day.  Today I was able to go to my grandson’s school for Grandparent’s Day.

In the midst of losing a family member, being with family is the best comfort.

And that’s why St. Agnes’ House is special.  When families are going through medical challenges, they want to be together, and we can often provide the lodging they need.  We don’t limit the number of family members who can stay.  We’re glad to provide a place so families and friends can be comforted….

Enjoy my view from the porch…an acrostic poem my grandson wrote for me today…

Love, Rebecca+
