A View from the Porch (April 16, 2015)

I’m traveling again.  My granddaughter makes her First Communion on Saturday and I’m taking the priest’s traditional post-Easter vacation this week.  It’s over 600 miles from Kentucky to my son’s home in Pennsylvania.  The traffic was thick and slow from Corbin to Lexington and I got a late start, so I decided to stop for the night at a Marriott chain hotel in Cumberland Maryland.

I was thinking how nice the linens and towels were at this hotel and decided to check the tag for the towels to see if I could discover their brand.  It was Standard Textiles.  I loved the feel of the towels and I was so happy to know they were from Standard Textiles.  You see, last year I spoke to Professor Elizabeth Easter of the University of Kentucky.  I wanted to learn about sheets and towels that could withstand the many washings in hot water that are necessary for St. Agnes’ House.  When I asked where such linens could be purchased, Professor Easter gave me a couple of recommendations and I got in touch with Standard Textiles.

This year, we’ve started replacing our sheets and towels with these hotel quality sheets and towels.  We needed towels badly, so bought 16 sets of those, enough for every possible guest at the House.  Recently, a generous donor purchased sheets, towels and some pillows for each room and each possible guest!

When guests come to St. Agnes’ House, the least we can do is create a great experience.  Our guests are facing difficult times and thanks to you and so many others, they are welcomed with beautifully-painted rooms, and everything that makes for a good night’s sleep.

Thanks so much and if you’d like to contribute to this special linen and sheet replacement process, please let me know.  We’d like to have 4 sets of sheets and towels for each room to be sure we have enough due to turnover and sending to the commercial laundry.

Our guests get to use similar great towels...

A view of the Susquehanna River in Harrisburg on Monday. When I was a child and we'd cross the bridge in the distance, we'd look to see if any steps down to the river were showing.

The river was high on Monday. The bridge in the distance is a walking bridge only, but I do remember when cars went across it.
